Explore the intersection of health and storytelling, bringing new 'Healthy Perspectives' to life through the art of filmmaking. In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Doha Film Institute is delighted to present an immersive workshop focusing on health, inviting aspiring filmmakers, including writers, directors, and those keen on mastering technical crew roles like camera operation, lighting, sound, and editing to embark on the journey of creating their own short films.

Under the mentorship of acclaimed filmmaker Corine Shawi, this hands-on programme provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential tools of filmmaking. Engaging in practical exercises, participants will acquire fundamental techniques essential for crafting and producing a short film. The initiative spans from foundational narrative development to the intricacies of visual storytelling, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Throughout the workshop, we will offer:

• Directing the Actors Training (for writers/directors)
• Technical Training (for those interested in camera, lighting, sound, and editing)

This is more than just a learning experience. Your completed short film could be showcased at DFI's prestigious annual film festival, offering you a platform to share your health-inspired stories with the world!

Meet the Mentor

Corine Shawi

Lebanese filmmaker Corine Shawi started making films at the age of 20 with her first documentary, 'Les Femmes Bonnes.' This film, spanning six years, followed Doulika's life between Lebanon and Sri Lanka and marked the beginning of her career. Over time, Shawi's fascination with exploring complex human connections deepened. She directed several short documentaries: 'Oxygen' (2007) encouraged her family to address a taboo subject, while 'Affinity' (2007) explored the boundaries of friendships. 'Film of Welcome and Farewells' (2009) portrayed loneliness in Copenhagen and premiered at the Écrans du Réel festival. 'I Love You Forever' (2010) unfolded the unusual story of two elderly sisters, a blend of love and loss premiering at CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Film Festival. Her second full-length documentary, 'E muet' (2013), examined themes of friendship and love, premiering in the FID Marseille international competition.

Corine's most recent documentary, 'Perhaps What I Fear Does Not Exist' (2022), embarked on a four-year journey to seek absolution for a broken family by helping her father walk again. The film premiered at the Dok Leipzig international competition, winning the Best Documentary prize at the Columbus Film Festival and the Special Jury Prize at FIDADOC. Beyond her role as a filmmaker, Corine is passionate about sharing her knowledge and expertise with aspiring filmmakers. Since 2011, she has been teaching filmmaking at Saint Joseph University in Lebanon and has collaborated with the National Film School of Denmark on numerous occasions. Additionally, she co-founded TAABIR Visual Language Intensive Workshops, committed to supporting the growth of new filmmakers.
